School of Medicine and Health Sciences Research

The GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), the 11th oldest medical school in the country, is dedicated to providing the  best combination of rigorous academic programs with  multidisciplinary research experiences in support of its Doctor of  Medicine degree and 18 undergraduate and graduate Health Sciences
programs.

Positioned in the heart of the nation’s capital, students have access to research opportunities with numerous leading health research organizations such as Children’s National Medical Center, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Veterans Administration, or with one of the dozens of centers and institutes housed at the GW Medical Center.

The areas of emphasis for research at SMHS are  strategically targeted for programmatic growth and excellence, and  include key topics including autism, cancer, cardiovascular disease,  and neglected infections of poverty.  In support of these strategic research priorities, the School is  investing significant resources into faculty recruitment and  facilities upgrades to maintain and enhance the school’s standing as a research-intensive institution. The school is in the process of renovating approximately 25,000 square feet of space to expand academic space and create “open lab space” to encourage greater  collaboration among researchers in the field of neglected infections of poverty.

Students also have an opportunity to showcase their research in Fusion, a student-run research journal published by the William H. Beaumont Medical Research Honor Society.
