A World of Opportunities

Books, exams, and lectures are only one part of a student’s education at SMHS. Internships, community service activities, and student organizations constitute another vital component of the GW experience. With a wealth of national and international organizations just steps away from the Medical Center’s Foggy Bottom campus, students can partake in a multitude of extracurricular endeavors, including interning at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), volunteering at a community health clinic, or participating in an oncology student interest group. While a sound didactic education is imperative, SMHS students find that it is their experiences outside of the classroom that shape them into health care professionals who are compassionate, culturally competent, and team-oriented.

Travel with a Purpose

Each year, GW medical students travel abroad to care for underserved communities around the globe.  Students see approximately 1,000 Haitian patients annually in schools, churches, or simple wooden shacks, supplementing the work of a Haitian health care NGO.
