Year 3 Alternative Curriculum

Third-year students may have the opportunity to participate in an alternative curriculum that has two six-month blocks—one that is exclusively inpatient and the other that is exclusively ambulatory.  Advantages to this curriculum include longer experiences in Internal Medicine/Family Medicine, Surgery, and Pediatrics, more exposure to faculty mentors, ambulatory experiences in Women’s Health and Psychiatry, the opportunity to experience more realistic practice environments, the opportunity to sample more electives earlier on in medical training, and flexibility in the timing of examinations.

Procedures for Application: Class of 2012

  1. Eligibility - Current second year students in good academic standing (The committee will consider your academic performance in the first two years as a significant factor.  Students with a history of significant academic difficulties will not be considered).
  • Students must receive a passing score on Step 1 of the USMLE (students who fail Step 1 will be transferred to the regular curriculum)
  • Students who develop academic difficulty or issues related to professional behavior and performance during the third year may be transferred to the regular curriculum at the discretion of the Dean.
  1. Application Procedures - Submit the following to Harolyn Johnson in the Dean’s Office by April 30.

        • One page explanation of your interest in the Alternative Curriculum
        • Description of your proposed Special Project.  Special Projects could include basic science or clinical research (it is acceptable to propose continued work on a project that you initiated earlier in medical school), scholarly reviews of medical topics (clinical conditions or diseases, health policy or global health issues), community service projects, development of educational materials for students or patients, or other scholarly work requiring substantial academic effort.  If you are enrolled in the Track Program, your proposed project should be related to your Track (we realize that this may be a tentative proposal, but be as specific as you can).

            • Two page maximum
            • Description of Project (at least one page)
            • Proposed Mentor if applicable
