Process for Visiting Residents

Residents rotating to GW from other programs must provide the following documentation to the GME Office 30 days in advance of their anticipated rotation:

  • Visiting Resident Information Form
  • Copy of CV
  • Proof of HIPPA and OSHA Compliance
  • Copy of ECFMG Certificate (if applicable)
  • Liability Insurance Certificate from Risk Management Office (GWU must be named Certificate Holder)
  • Letter from Program Director at home institution
  • Letter from GW Program Director


Residents and fellows rotating to GWU who hold an unrestricted license in another jurisdiction must obtain a D.C. license before beginning their rotation, unless they are enrolled in a military or federal residency program. The cost for this license must be paid by the rotating resident/fellow.


Residents and fellows rotating to GWU who do not have an unrestricted license in another jurisdiction must register with the D.C. Board of Health as an unlicensed medical practitioner, unless they are in a military or federal residency program or the rotation is 90 days or less. Cost of the UMP registration must be paid by the rotating resident/fellow. The process for registration is:

  • Please logon to http://dchealth.dc.gov
  • Click on “Professional Licensing” (under Services)
  • Click on “Postgraduate Physician Enrollment”
  • Click on “Register” to create a User ID and Password
  • Complete all sections of the Enrollment Form
  • Print and Sign the Enrollment Form
  • Click on “submit”
  • Send the signed Enrollment Form to the GME Office, with a check payable to Graduate Medical Education for the cost of the registration
