Overview

The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) is the 11th oldest medical school in the country and has long been at the forefront of medical and health sciences training. Situated prominently on Pennsylvania Avenue, SMHS provides students and faculty with unmatched opportunities to engage with nearby government, non-governmental, and non-profit organizations. Inside the classroom, students are exposed to some of the most innovative educational techniques in the nation, including the Clinical Learning and Simulation Skills (CLASS) Center, a facility that allows students to practice essential skills, procedures, and critical care training on human patient simulators. Because of these resources, SMHS graduates well-trained, compassionate professionals who are exceptionally prepared to impact the future of our nation’s health care.

In collaboration with the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences and the Children’s National Medical Center, SMHS also hosts the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBS), the administrative and academic home for interdisciplinary Ph.D. training in the Biomedical Sciences. Established in 1996, the institute brings together a wealth of teaching and research opportunities for doctoral-level students.

SMHS further provides residency training through the department of Graduate Medical Education (GME). With dozens of top-tier residency programs, SMHS is a competitive and esteemed destination for doctors across the country. Further, GME ensures that GW students, residents, fellows, faculty, and doctors remain up-to-date on the most modern advances in medicine by hosting a series of core lectures.
